Navilights - Wayfinding on Expo Shanghai 2010

This autumn I went to Shanghai with Designskolen Kolding from Denmark to work together with some students from Tong Ji University. We created a wayfinding concept for expo Shanghai 2010. The industrial Designers made several bikes for different personas. Our system works with the help of lights and colour. Because the Expo area is very big it is devided into five smaller areas. Each area has it's own colour. To orientate around Expo with the bikes or by foot we decided to have wayfindingpoints in each area. They are enlightend by the colour of their area. The look of these points reminds on chinese culture because we used tall bamboo sticks with integrated lights to make them visible even if they are not close to you. The bamboo and the lights are both very typical things you'll find in china especially in big cities like Shanghai. On each wayfinding point there is a map on the ground which shows directions of other areas or pavillions by colour coded lines. The length of the lines show the distance. We also included the bikes in our concept by integrating lights in the frame. If a bike moves it's enlightend by the colour of the area it is moving towards to. So the bikes work like a compass for the rider and other people close to a bike. The lights on the bike look like a line aswell. If the rider gets closer to an area the line will become shorter so you get a feeling about the distance. To present our project we built a model which was exhibited at the Shanghai International Creative Industry Week together with the bikes.
